Thrift Shop

Seriously can't stop listening to that Macklemore song, guys. I even played it for my mom last weekend, and she loved it. We all had it stuck in our heads as we went out on our thrifting quest, and this week I truly am "so pumped about some shit from the thrift shop." For $13, I got this entire new outfit (including the leather boots), which I wore yesterday to talk to students about our program's seminars at a prospective student open house event.

I was originally planning to wear a new dress with a peplum detail, but as I got ready I started to feel like maybe it was too tight or just too much for this particular context. I sent an SOS to Meg so we could have a fashion emergency FaceTime sesh. I wanted to look like myself—Meg and I both have strong feelings about not toning down our femininity or femme visibility in an academic context. But I still wanted to feel comfortable. In the end, I chose this outfit instead because I felt like the loud leopard print/pink lipstick still helped me express myself, but I didn't need to worry about tugging at my clothes or pulling things down while addressing a large group.

Clothes aside, the event was great. These kinds of things can be a great reminder of why you have chosen to pursue a particular path at a particular institution. I'm so glad to be a part of my community!

My hair was in a trusty top-knot for the event—not this wavy mess!

  1. Looking fly, girl. I liked the peplum dress, but this looks amazing too!
