Playing with patterns

I'm perhaps inordinately proud of this outfit, and wore a similar (unphotographed) look to class on Monday for good measure. I've been bored with this sweater for a while-- I love the pattern, but have found myself wearing it only with black or grey, which has made for some dull outfits and caused me to consider its retirement.

Discovering that I could wear it with polka dots was kind of a game changer for me and this cardi.  I suppose I look kind of smug about it in these pictures, and for good reason-- pattern mixing has always been a challenge for me.

I wore this roaming around the city to a couple of different music events and out to the bar for a friend's birthday.  Simple, warm, and I felt awesome.  This polka dotted dress has been good to me over the years, and super versatile.  I remember wearing it to the first class I ever taught in 2008-- I'm sure it would be scandalously short on some, but for me it feels appropriate for going out and for slightly more professional engagements.  It was an inexpensive purchase from Forever 21, but it's held up remarkably well, and is machine washable-- I'm a little surprised it ended up being such a wardrobe workhorse, but these things work in mysterious ways.
